Joan Staufer: Continuum

Joan Staufer: Continuum Virtual Exhibit will be available for online viewing through February 25.

'Continuum: a continuous sequence in which adjacent elements are not perceptibility different from one another although the extremes are quite distinct.'

As an artist and a seeker , I recurringly find myself in liminal space on the continuum.

'Liminal comes from the Latin word 'limen` meaning threshold or any place of entering or beginning. A liminal space is the space between the   'what was' and the 'what is next'.  It's a place of transition, waiting and unknowing.

The works, as presented, reflect a narrative of my experience within the continuum of life and nature in her raw and true form. I find them, coax them, and let them instruct me of their purpose.

They begin with the discovery of an object, feeling or vista that exists within the intimate confines of my world. Their evolution into being varies from a flash of discovery and recognition to years of handling, arranging... waiting.

They are intended to be viewed as a whole comprised of many parts ,where one can briefly pause to absorb a fragment, a reflection of a realm. Imagine a hike or drive through various environments and vistas. I invite you to find your place on this most personal continuum, maybe for a moment in liminal space.

"one's own landscape comes in time to be a sort of outlying part of himself" John Burroughs, 1873
