Buckeye Girls State Canceled, Mount Union Continuing to Offer Scholarships to Eligible Students

April 24, 2020

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The American Legion Auxiliary of Ohio has announced that Buckeye Girls State, held annually in June on the campus of the University of Mount Union, has been canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mount Union will continue to offer its $2,000 Buckeye Girls State Scholarship, which is available to incoming undergraduate students who participated in the American Legion Auxiliary’s annual Buckeye Girls State event on campus during the summer before their senior year in high school.

Although the event has been canceled for 2020, the scholarship will still remain available to eligible students who were selected to participate in Buckeye Girls State based on their leadership qualities.

“Mount Union is honored to host Buckeye Girls State every summer and we’ll miss having them on campus this year for their leadership training,” said Lindajean Western, vice president for enrollment management at Mount Union. “Although the event is canceled, it is important that we recognize these students for their high school achievements by offering this scholarship and assisting them in making a Mount Union education accessible.”
