April 08, 2020

BLACKSBURG, Virginia — Dr. Scott Jefferies ’99, superintendent of Wythe County Public Schools in Virginia and adjunct professor in the University of Mount Union’s Master of Education program, was recently named the Outstanding Recent Alumni of Graduate Studies from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

The award is given to an alumnus or alumna of the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech who has graduated in the last ten years and showcases a commitment to their professional industry, community, or Virginia Tech. Jefferies earned a Doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech in 2017 and was excited about the opportunity to teach in Mount Union’s M.Ed. program.

“I learned so much at Mount Union, and I am here doing what I am doing today because of the foundation that was formed during my time on campus,” said Jefferies. “Being a student in the Department of Education, I saw the expertise and guidance firsthand. Now, to be a proud member of the Department, I feel great pride in knowing that I am helping the next generation of educational leaders through the M.Ed. program at Mount Union, just as the Department helped me.”

Jefferies tries to relay his experience as a public school superintendent to the teaching professionals in Mount Union’s M.Ed. program.

“I rely on my experiences as a superintendent to communicate to my students what educational leadership looks like right now, and what will best prepare them for success in their educational leadership careers,” Jefferies said. “School systems are looking for leaders that are excellent communicators, committed to forming relationships within their school and school community, problem solvers, and who make decisions in the best interest of their students. Any school system that is privileged enough to get an educational leader that has successfully completed the M.Ed. program at Mount Union is getting someone who is ready to lead, ready to work, and ready to make a difference.”
