March 07, 2018

ALLIANCE, Ohio - The University of Mount Union's Department of Theatre is set to present "Under Fire: Stories of Combat Veterans Across Generations" Thursday, March 22 - Sunday, March 25.

Cast members include Cassie Mead '20, George Carr '19, Devin Sanders '21, Jeff Centrello '20, Jacob Williams '21, Lilly Williams '20, Shannon Catanella '18, Madison Priestap '21, Ally Staggers '20, Jason Bowman '21 and Marcus Morrison '19. Kerstin Vaughn '19 is the stage manager, and Ashton Carr '21 is the assistant stage manager.

Michael Arndt, a theatre professor on sabbatical from California Lutheran University, wrote "Under Fire" and is directing the play at Mount Union. He is a combat veteran who proudly served in Vietnam. Arndt cautions that the play is "about the soldiers, not about the politics," and the audiences will leave with a greater understanding of the brave men and women who served and continue to serve.

"'Under Fire' is a poignant and unflinching look at the experiences of combat veterans," said Kevin Kern, associate professor and chair of the Department of Theatre at Mount Union. "Audiences will find this play to be about healing, about coming to terms with the toll that war takes on the participants and about moving forward."

While at Mount Union, Arndt will interview local veterans and incorporate their stories into the play. "The Mount Union production will have some 'Northeast Ohio flavor,'" commented Kern.

The Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances will be at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. All performances take place in the Brush Performance Hall of the Giese Center for the Performing Arts.
