Mount Union Students: The Driving Force Behind New Men’s Chorus

Did you know that the University of Mount Union’s Department of Music has been an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music since 1935?
As a young musician, I am so thankful for the opportunity to sing in concert choir, Kantorei, and Cantus Femina. Although we inhabit three amazing choirs on campus, the dedication of the students, faculty, staff, and community has allowed the program to further progress over the years.
The Department of Music has always excelled in cultivating beauty through people, process, and performance. Despite the hard times of the COVID-19 pandemic, the choral program is thriving with the new addition of a men’s chorus this spring.
The men’s chorus consists of nine male students ranging from all levels and majors including music education, theatre, and even electrical engineering!
Dr. Grant Cook, director of choral activities, states that with the support of the students, the idea of men’s chorus is now a reality.
“I am delighted to say that I cannot take credit for this initiative. The men’s chorus is the brainchild of students Nate Teall and Ben Wykoff. Their collective passion for this project was so compelling that I knew we had to get it off the ground! I am really excited to see where this musical journey leads us.” Cook said.
To me, the addition of this men’s chorus means that students get the opportunity to further their skills, try new repertoire, as well as to have fun.
Nate Teall ’22 and Ben Wykoff ’23 are both greatly involved in all parts of the Department of Music. Even with their busy schedules, they were delighted to begin rehearsals.
Teall, of Massillon, OH, is a junior music education major with a focus in voice. He is involved in concert choir, Ohio Collegiate Music Education Association (OCMEA) and also serves at a resident assistant in Ketcham Hall.
“This group has been able to express the emotions and feelings that are best felt in a men’s ensemble setting.” Teall admits.
Wykoff, of Jackson Township, OH is a sophomore music education major with a focus in voice. He is a member of concert choir, Kantorei, OCMEA, Mu Phi Epsilon, and string orchestra.
“To me, the addition of this men’s chorus means that students get the opportunity to further their skills, try new repertoire, as well as to have fun.” Wykoff said.
“It is something and I have dreamed about having on campus for a while.”
I had the privilege of attending one of the Men’s Chorus rehearsals and I must say that the beauty they create in song is unlike anything I have heard thus far in my college career. Their rich tones and connectivity to one another produce such astounding music.
