Why Biology?

I chose biology as my major because I am interested in learning about the human body and the complex systems that take place inside living organisms. I also took CCP Biology in high school, which sparked my interest in the subject. As my ultimate career goal is to be a forensic scientist or toxicologist, I am minoring in criminal justice which will teach me about the law and allow me to step foot into real life situations. Mount Union is preparing me to enter my desired career with confidence because the courses I am taking are helping me build the skillset I need to succeed after graduation.

Advice to Prospective Students

The best advice I can give to students looking at college and/or applying to college is not to stress too much. I know that not stressing about the college process sounds impossible, but what is meant to be will be and you will end up at the college that is right for you. I heard about Mount Union from my high school guidance counselor. I chose to attend because I loved the small, intimate class sizes that allowed me to build meaningful relationships with my peers and professors. It has become my home away from home because everyone on campus is welcoming and friendly. I'm sure that in the end, you'll love the campus where you end up pursuing your undergraduate degree at!

Experiential Learning

The labs I have conducted have provided me with hands-on opportunities that allow me to understand what a situation in real life would be like. I've also learned the importance of team work and communication in a professional setting. Dr. Jean has had a great impact on my UMU experience so far. Her extensive knowledge of science is astounding and she is always willing to help her students when they are struggling. Taking advantage of the real-world learning opportunities at Mount Union has allowed me to realize that no one is perfect; you make mistakes and learn from them. I have always been highly critical of myself and set extremely high standards for myself. Over time, I have learned that I cannot always control everything and that it is beneficial to take a break if I need it.
