Student Employment

Student Employment

Mount Union offers many on- and off-campus student employment opportunities, allowing students to earn money to help pay educational expenses. Students can either apply for jobs on Handshake or inquire in person about potential openings in various departments on campus.

To apply for jobs, visit the website Handshake, create an account, and click on the University of Mount Union’s Student Employment page.

Federal Work Study

Federal Work Study is funding Mount Union receives from the federal government to provide a small portion of our student employment program. Your FAFSA determines Federal Work Study eligibility. If you qualify for Federal Work Study, it will be noted on your financial aid offer.

On Handshake, jobs will be marked with “FWS” in the title. These jobs are located off campus and have a slightly higher pay rate. They are through non-profit organizations, where students are paid for community service. Visit Handshake to apply now.

Important Details After Being Hired

Once you're hired for a position, please ensure your supervisor submits a student work authorization before you start working. You will not be able to clock in or out until this step is completed.

You will also need to complete payroll paperwork to get paid. The paperwork will include presenting a driver's license, birth certificate, or passport to the Office of Payroll. You will also need your banking and routing information for the employment paperwork. The Office of Payroll is located on the main level of Beeghly Hall, number 35, on the campus map.

Additional Notes:

  • Students may not work more than 20 hours per week
  • Students are required to clock in and out in Self-Service
  • Students must communicate absences with their supervisor
  • Students may not work during class
  • Students must be enrolled full-time

Supervisor Information

  • How to Post a Job

If a department or office is interested in hiring a student worker, they must complete the Student Employment Job Description form. After submitting the form, the Office of Student Financial Aid will post the open position on Handshake.

The department or office must also have the funding in its budget to pay the student worker. Supervisors will be sent applications from Handshake, conduct interviews, and hire who they see fit. Per the Student Employment Policy, all open positions must be posted on Handshake unless you are rehiring a student who previously held your position.

  • How to Hire a Student

Once a student is hired, supervisors must complete a Student Work Authorization form, which must be completed every semester.
