Becoming a DPT

Prior to attending Mount Union's DPT program, I took a few gap years working as a physical therapy technician and as a cardiac exercise specialist. I loved the work that I was doing but wanted to be able to do more for my patients. I was unsure about going back to school, however, encouraged by my patients and colleagues, I decided to re-apply to PT school. I chose to become a Doctor of Physical Therapy because not only do I help my patients recover from a physical injury, but get to help them with the frustration that being injured puts on their mental health.

An Exceptional Program

Mount Union stood apart with their holistic interview process and because the faculty makes you feel like at home. I had been turned away from other physical therapy schools with my Master’s degree GPA not being considered in my application process, but Mount Union took that into consideration and saw that as a strength. I was able to show improvement from my undergraduate degree to maintaining a position on the dean’s list throughout my Master’s program. My current rotation is very unique because I've learned about different types of injuries and ways on treating them. I've seen a wide variety of diagnoses from coccyx pain, TMJ, amputations, pelvic floor, and more. The clinic that I am at partners with a non-profit that serves those who are underinsured and/or disadvantaged. This experience has been challenging but rewarding as about 60% of the patients are Spanish-speaking. Not only do I get to practice my physical therapy skills, but learn Spanish while treating patients. This rotation has solidified my desire to work in non-profit and global health.
