Why did you choose Accounting?
I typically start by stating Accounting chose me; as an undergrad in Business at Mount Union I was recruited by one of the Big 4 public accounting firms, with the help of my advisor, Dr. Pat Mathews. The firm offered me the opportunity to earn a Master of Science in Accountancy and prepared me to become a CPA. Through working as an auditor I found that I loved the logical approach that accountants and auditors take and enjoyed the interactions with clients and colleagues. I chose to pursue a career in accounting education because of those same things; I can work with students to expose the logic behind accounting and build relationships with both the students and colleagues at the University.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of the job is the interaction with students. Being able to watch students as they make sense of accounting concepts is very rewarding. Not only that, but I really enjoy advising students and helping to guide their next steps after college. Mentoring is a responsibility I take very seriously, but is also one of the most fun parts of the job.
How is Mount Union unique?
Mount Union is in a unique position: the University provides the resources to allow students to learn in a "small" college environment, building relationships with faculty, staff and students, while also providing students with the opportunities allotted to the "big" schools, including landing internships and full-time employment through networking. Students in the accounting program have historically had much success landing internships and full-time employment with national, regional and local accounting firms and organizations. Students are taught by academics and practitioners, providing them with the technical background needed to be a successful accountant and the insight into the profession that can help guide their career path.
