Why Mount Union?
I came to Mount Union for a tour through my Athletic Health Care and Fitness program at my high school. The small class sizes, amazing professors, and incredible nursing program are what made me choose Mount Union. Faculty are always willing to help students as are upperclassmen. I've been successful in my journey as a nursing student thanks to the support from the department's faculty like Dr. Andrea Corbisello, Dr. Phil Lascola, and Dr. David Mungo as they are helping me achieve my academic and professional goals.
Overcoming Obstacles as a First-Generation Student
Moving cities to go to college is difficult, but beginning a collegiate career without having a model to base your experience off of is even harder. I am the first person in my family to pursue a college degree and I was unsure if I was doing "it" right. Though, with the guidance from faculty and staff, I was able to build a rhythm to excel in and outside the classroom. I joined the First Generation Student Organization where I met other students who learned to navigate college as first-gen students.
Career Aspirations
I chose nursing because I've always loved to help people when they need it. Nursing is also a broad field, allowing students to apply the skills they've learned in the classroom everywhere in the medical industry. Therefore, I will succeed in my career in whichever specialty I choose. I have been able to dissect animals in anatomy lab to fully understand what is going on and what a certain part of the body looks like. That has been my favorite experience because it allows me to look at the body first hand rather than through a picture. Though, my ultimate career goal is to become a surgical nurse and obtaining my BSN through Mount Union is setting me up to build my skillset and succeed after graduation.
