Growing Up with Mount Union
I was exposed to Mount Union at a very young age since I live just about three blocks away. I love that it's so close to home because if I ever need to visit my family, they're right there. I ultimately chose to go to Mount because I was already so familiar with the campus, and it felt like home. I have walked this campus countless times throughout my childhood and I have grown attached to the campus. I have so many memories from walking my dog, to riding bikes with my brother and dad. It's amazing. I am a graduate of Alliance High School I was offered one of fifteen scholarships that are made available to AHS graduates called the Investment Alliance Award. I also receive a yearly scholarship called the John and Roene Klusch Renewable Scholarship from the AHS Foundation that works to fund the secondary education of AHS graduates.
Why Chemistry?
I chose chemistry as my major because I had an amazing chemistry teacher in high school that invigorated my passion for it. I always knew I wanted to do something that pertained to science when I grew up, but I wasn't sure what. I decided later that I wanted to be an optometrist, but I still needed an undergraduate major before I could move on to graduate school. Since I had such an amazing experience in high school in chemistry, I decided I would major in chemistry. As a chemistry major, I go to in person lab every week for multiple science classes a week. I believe these hands-on experiences really give me the opportunity to let the material sink into the point that I can understand the lesson.
Career Goals
My goal is to become an optometrist or eye doctor. Knowing Mount's past achievements, as well as the challenging courses built to make students put maximum effort into learning, I know that I will be well equipped when entering the work force. I believe the Integrative Core at Mount will make me a better professional in my field because as an optometrist I must be able to speak to people clearly every day. Part of the integrative core is presenting directly to our classmates something we have studied over the semester. This is a helpful tool for the work force in general, but by being an optometrist, I need to communicate effortlessly to my patients which the integrative core helps me learn to do.
