"I traveled to Japan for the first time in the summer of 2023 for vacation purposes, therefore, when I returned in 2024 for my study abroad program, I did not struggle," said Hackney. "Akita has a lot to offer, so I explored places like Oga Peninsula, Lake of Tazawa, and Kakunodate Town."
While Hackney missed his home back in the United States, he befriended people from all over the world who helped him enjoy full immersion in the Japanese culture. His favorite experience was venturing off to the city each day and returning with different stories to be able to tell his friends and family.

"Studying abroad taught me why it is important to understand and speak another language as it helps you overcome different situations," said Hackney. "The experience I lived in Akita was the best, and I would not change anything about it."
