ALLIANCE - Vincent Wai Sum Fung ’23, a medical laboratory science alumnus from China, explains that his experience at the University of Mount Union was unforgettable.

“I decided to study medical laboratory science and [during my senior year,] I was enrolled in the Cleveland Clinic’s MLS program,” said Fung. “I could not have achieved this accomplishment without the guidance from Dr. McElhinney and Dr. Risley.”

At Mount Union, Fung not only became part of the student life community but built meaningful relationships with faculty and staff members like Dr. Kim Risley, professor of biologyDr. Amy McElhinney, associate professor of biology, and Dawn Daugherty, director of international student services.

“I came to America when I was 14 years old, and moving to a completely new country without being able to speak the language was probably one of the most difficult things I have ever done,” said Fung. “However, the experiences and struggles eventually became a motivation and an opportunity to improve my ability to adapt to new environments more easily.”

Fung explains that stepping outside his comfort zone in and outside the classroom helped him better his English-speaking skills as he needed to socialize with others. Rather than feeling embarrassed, Fung learned to push through any challenge that was presented to him because he realized that people enjoyed engaging in conversation with him. This, Fung describes as the best real-world experience as it helped shape his mindset.

It was never about where it’s at, [but about] all the people around you.

Daugherty’s unconditional support towards international students made Fung feel like he found his second home, as he describes Daugherty as a passionate person. Fung was a student employee for Daugherty, and he adds that she was the most excited when a new incoming class of international students would arrive on campus.

“I was also a member of Anime Club, Japanese Club, and a brother of Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) Fraternity, which was like a community where every member was close with each other—we faced and solved challenges together,” said Fung.

Fung currently works as an ASCP-certified Medical Laboratory Scientist, working in a molecular oncology lab where he performs cancer monitoring tests and assists pathologists in diagnosing cancer patients nationwide. He explains that if he were given the opportunity to relive his collegiate experience, he would always choose to be an international student.
