ALLIANCE — Lu Herrera’s ’25 academic journey at Mount Union has been full of real-world experiences, enhancing her hands-on skills. A biology major from Peru, Herrera aspires to become a surgeon in the future.

This past summer, Herrera interned at The Center for Applied and Health Sciences in Canfield, Ohio as a research assistant working on natural supplements. Explaining that she has always been fascinated by research in science, Herrera stated that learning from field experts will help enhance her career in the medical field. Herrera explained that Dr. Kim Risley, professor of biology, helped her apply for the position, knowing that the work the center focuses on would be of Herrera’s interest.

“The internship ran from May through July, and I was amazed at how much work we accomplished in just two months,” said Herrera. “Though, my favorite part of the internship was meeting and [working alongside new] people at the lab.”
