Mount Union Announces Innovative New Programs in Artificial Intelligence

May 23, 2024

ALLIANCE — The University of Mount Union has announced two new minors to develop leaders ready to take on the next generation of technology: artificial intelligence (AI) and applied artificial intelligence.

The artificial intelligence program is designed for those interested in pursuing a career in the technical side of AI. Taught by expert faculty and rooted in the foundation of Mount Union’s strong computer science and data science and analytics majors, students will enhance skills in machine learning, algorithm development and programming.

Mount Union's new offering in applied artificial intelligence provides a more inclusive and accessible experience. This minor is designed for those looking to harness the power of AI tools and applications in their careers. The applied AI program offers an understanding of AI fundamentals, hands-on experiences with AI applications and tools relevant to students’ disciplines and an exploration of ethical issues within the field.

With the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting that 47% of jobs will feature some form of automation by 2030, these two programs answer the demand for AI-proficient personnel in all fields.

William Cunion, vice president for academic affairs commented, “Artificial intelligence is already changing the way that people live and work across the globe, and we are excited and confident that Mount Union is taking bold steps to become leaders in this emerging field. We anticipate that we will attract students who recognize the career potential in developing AI proficiency in a variety of fields, as well as improving connections with community partners who are looking to upskill their workforce.”

"Like the computer itself, AI is quickly becoming the key tool for increasing human productivity,” added Sandra Madar, associate vice president for academic affairs and dean of undergraduate studies. “We are pleased to offer these important new opportunities for students across all majors. Our faculty are in tune to the rapidly evolving needs of industries and will continue to innovate curricula in response.”

These programs will be available to all students beginning in fall 2024. Learn more about these unique offerings by visiting mountunion.edu/artificial-intelligence and mountunion.edu/applied-ai.
