August 06, 2019

TIFFIN, Ohio — The University of Mount Union has announced it will be a founding member of the recently-formed Great Lakes Esports Conference (GLEC) and compete against eight institutions from Ohio and Indiana beginning in the fall 2019 semester.

Mount Union’s team will compete in League of Legends, Overwatch and Rocket League. The inaugural schools in the GLEC are Defiance College, Lourdes University, Marietta College, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Tiffin University, Trine University and Mount Union.

"The GLEC is a great opportunity to give our students more opportunities to compete against other local institutions, and we are super excited to be involved in the inaugural season,” said Derek Spinell, director and head coach of Mount Union esports.

Teams will play a nine-week schedule on Saturdays beginning September 21 and concluding November 16 with a conference championship held at Tiffin in the spring. Each team will also have one bye week during the season.

Mount Union will host live broadcasts of every match in its newly-constructed Esports Center with the times of each competition to be announced at a later date.
