Shakespeare at the Castle is back with “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”

June 24, 2021

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The seventh season of Shakespeare at the Castle (SATC) returns this year and kicks-off with four performances of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at Alliance’s historic Glamorgan Castle, Thursday, August 5 – Sunday, August 8.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, Shakespeare’s comic fantasy of four lovers who find themselves bewitched by fairies is a sly reckoning with love, jealousy and marriage.

The SATC adaptation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be directed by Matthew Greenberg, who has taken the play out of 16th century Athens, Greece and dropped it into 21st century Athens, Ohio. Greenberg is eager to see patrons return and immerse themselves in this live show.

“My hope is that by following the characters as they get lost in the forest, we can head back to Athens and to our realities, with a new sense of community found,” said Greenberg. “In our current year where so much has been taken away, I believe through uproarious laughter, fantasy and love, our audience will gain a greater sense of empathy for ourselves and those around us, even if we disagree with one’s point of views. As 'Midsummer' teaches us, when we lean into our dreams, joy and even a little bit of mischief, positive change awaits us on the other side. I can’t wait to share laughter with you again.”

SATC Artistic Director Kevin Kern is looking forward to being able to entertain the community.

“What we all need now, maybe more than anything, is to sit down with our families, next to our neighbors and friends and have a good laugh,” said Kern. “That’s what this production is all about.”

All four performances begin at 7 p.m. The Glamorgan Castle grounds will open early for those who wish to picnic before the show. There will also be a vendor on hand selling desserts and drinks prior to the show and during the intermission.

General admission pre-sale tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children. Bleacher pre-sale tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Children under 6 are free.
