May 29, 2018

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Three individual national titles helped propel Mount Union to its second outdoor track and field team national title at the 2018 NCAA Division III Championships Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

This title is the third national championship earned in track and field by the Purple Raiders. Similar to the outdoor title in 2014 and indoor title earlier this year, it came down to a win in the final event – the 4x400 relay.

Juniors James Roth ’19 and Clark Etzler ’19, senior Tyler Neff ’18 and sophomore AJ Digby ’20 ran a championship and school record time of 3:08.10 for the win.

Digby ran two more events on the day and scored a win in the 400 meter title race with a time of 46.07 to earn his first individual event national title. His time is the fifth fastest in NCAA Division III history and a new school record. He also combined with sophomore Darian Littlejohn ’20, senior Josh Weber ’18 and freshman Malik Britt ’21 to place ninth in the 4x100 meter relay.

Sophomore Mason Plant ’20 rallied to win the 110 meter hurdles with a school record time of 14.22. He is now a four-time All-American and two-time national champion after earning an indoor national title in the 60 meter hurdles earlier this year.

Mount Union also saw All-American performances in seventh place finishes from sophomore Matt Keim ’20 in the pole vault (16-0.75) and Sean Sherman ’20 in the shot put (54-1.25), along with senior Jaquill Scott ’18 in the javelin (205-6).

On the women's side, Mount Union got an All-American performance from freshman Alexianna Johnson ’21 who placed eighth in the long jump (18-8).

Mount Union now has 17 overall national championship titles with 13 in football, one in men's cross country (1974), one in men's indoor track and field (2018) and two in men's outdoor track and field (2014, 2018).
