ALLIANCE – In celebration of National First-Generation College Student on Friday, November 8, the University of Mount Union is highlighting biology major Abby Collier ’27. Her journey as a student has been led by inspiration and a drive to succeed.

“Looking for a concentration in college, my CCP professor at Stark State College motivated me to pursue a major in biology,” said Collier. “Along with research about the field as well as hands-on skills in labs, I have chosen to become an optometrist.”

Collier’s parents have supported her throughout her academic endeavors to give her a path to follow and mitigate obstacles in life. While Collier thanks her parents for supporting her, she explains that her dad’s work ethic is the reason why she has met every one of her academic goals. Watching her dad work to provide ends meet inspired Collier to become a determined student and work to become a successful professional and navigate the real world with ease.

"The best advice that I have been given is ‘everything happens for a reason’ and ‘every hardship [happens] for a reason,’” said Collier. “These have taught me to be patient.”

Collier advises first-generation students hesitant to further their education that they should take time to better understand their interests while recognizing that college is a time when students can discover themselves.

“Being a part of student organizations like the First-Generation Student Organization have taught me how to be a leader as well as provided me with teamwork skills,” said Collier. “Being an honors student has also allowed me to adapt to the rigor that I will experience in graduate school.”

Mount Union offers a space for students to grow and accomplish their dreams. Collier is one of those students who has found and continues to build her support system to make the best of her time on campus.
