Mount Union’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and offers certified degrees in chemistry, biochemistry, and environmental chemistry. This approval illustrates the quality and rigor of both programs, which provide an intellectual and experimental foundation for learning in addition to providing the communication skills critical to success in the science professions.
According to the ACS, there are a number of benefits of an approved program. Top high school students are drawn to these programs because of their established tradition and rigor. Approved departments attract accomplished faculty, offer a modern and well-maintained infrastructure, and provide a curriculum that is coherent. The approval process also provides a means for department self-evaluation, including the identification of strengths and opportunities. In addition, employers tend to find graduates of such programs to be better prepared for technical employment.
