Mount Union's Department of World Languages and Cultures
The Department of World Languages and Cultures offers degrees designed to prepare students for careers in the global marketplace. Through hands-on learning, study abroad experiences, international internships, and innovative research opportunities, students develop language skills and intercultural competence necessary for success in the 21st century. Our majors and minors pursue graduate work, secure teaching positions, and find meaningful employment in the United States and around the world.

Earn World Language Credit
Language Proficiency Requirement
As a graduation requirement, all Mount Union students must demonstrate proficiency in a modern world language equivalent to the satisfactory completion of a 102-level course.
Students can demonstrate this proficiency through several options:
- Passing an approved examination administered by the Department of World Languages and Cultures
- Providing an AP score of 3 or above
- Providing a CLEP score of 50 or higher
- Providing a state Seal of Biliteracy for a modern world language
- Completing coursework at the 102-level or above at Mount Union or at another accredited university, including College Credit Plus work
Earning Language Credits
In addition to meeting the World Language Proficiency requirement, students may be granted additional credit toward graduation and the completion of a minor or major in a modern world language at Mount Union, based on their AP score or having earned a state Seal of Biliteracy.
Students who earn the following AP scores are awarded the following credit hours*:
- AP 3 = 4 credit hours
- AP 4 = 8 credit hours
- AP 5 = 12 credit hours
- State Seal of Biliteracy = 8 credit hours
